Overhead spread of Thai snack ingredients on cream and mustard linen — crispy fish skin, puffed rice crackers, fried oyster mushrooms, tamarind candy, lemongrass, chillies and a glass of jasmine pandan drink.

What Thailand Actually Snacks On

Thailand takes snacking more seriously than almost anywhere else. Not as an afterthought between meals, but as a category with its own standards — texture engineered properly, flavours built in layers, and producers who have spent decades perfecting one thing.

Most of it has never reached an Indian shelf. That's the gap we went to close.

The flavours that define it

Four dominate, and they're the reason we went:

Salted egg. Cured duck-egg yolk turned into a golden, buttery coating. Rich, savoury, faintly sweet — the region's defining snack flavour of the last decade, and essentially unavailable in India until now.

Tom yum. Thailand's signature hot-and-sour profile, translated onto crisps. Lemongrass, lime and chilli doing the same work they do in the soup.

Mala. Sichuan by origin, adopted wholesale by young Thailand. A numbing, buzzing heat that builds rather than slaps.

Pandan. The fragrant green leaf behind half of Southeast Asia's desserts — gentle, coconut-adjacent, quietly addictive.

The textures nobody in India is making

Thailand's real edge is texture. Crispy fish and chicken skins engineered to shatter rather than chew. Shrimp chin crisps that are dense and sharp instead of airy and hollow. Fried oyster mushrooms with genuine savoury depth — the best argument for vegetarian snacking we've tasted anywhere. Mini rice crackers light enough to eat by the handful.

These aren't novelty items. They're what a mature snack culture produces when it has had decades to iterate.

How we chose

We spent weeks in Thailand tasting through factories, specialty producers and family-run snack houses — the kind of places that supply Bangkok's better restaurants and export to Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore. We tasted far more than we kept.

What made the shelf: 31 singles across 11 producers — OYUA, Younger Farms, Sang Sook, Shinmai, Sarach, My Chewy, Kaew, Tamarind House, Nasreen, Carada and IF — imported in small batches, sealed at origin, and graded honestly for heat on our 0–3 scale.

Same principle as when we built the pork snack category in India three years ago: if the category doesn't exist here, curate the best version of it rather than the cheapest.

Where to start

Buying single flavours from a range you've never tasted is a lottery, so we built 7 combos around specific occasions rather than random assortments.

First Flight is the low-risk entry — four categories, mildest flavours. Salted Egg Obsession takes the cult flavour across four textures. Bangkok Blockbuster is the party box. Pure Veg Passport is entirely vegetarian.

Or take the Flavour Finder — six questions and we'll match you to your first three packs.
